Prostate cancer remains one of the conditions that men do not like to discuss. The area of the body combined with the stress and embarrassment of the symptoms can lead to secrecy and force men to turn inward. This is a very dangerous stance to take since prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in males and is second only to lung cancer in terms of death rates. Although the statistics attached to lung cancer seem quite dire, there are some simple preventative measures that one can take that can drastically reduce the chances of prostate cancer developing. These changes can even be effective if there is a family history of the disease and if cancer has already been diagnosed.

Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce a man’s chances of developing prostate cancer. There are direct medical links to obesity ad cancer rates in general but there is further evidence to support that obesity has an effect on prostate cancer in particular. Medical professionals are not clear on the reasons why but some theories suggest that a reason could be weight gained near the middle region of the body. Men tend to carry extra pounds in this area leaving them more vulnerable to cancer developing. The rates for prostate cancer in obese men far outweigh those in men that maintain a healthy weight so keeping the pounds off could prove beneficial in preventing this disease.

Cutting down on red meat and fatty foods can reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Again, the exact reasons are not known but statistic show that men who regularly eat red meat and fatty foods have higher rates of prostate cancer then men who limit their portions. Some possible reasons to support this claim are that red meats are full of fatty acids that can irritate and cause harm to the prostate. Others believe that the grilling process can add chemicals to the meat making it more harmful to the health. Finally there is also the belief that when men overindulge on red meats they tend to sacrifice other foods such as fruits and vegetables that can help stop cancer cells from forming.

Adding portions of fresh fruits and vegetables to the diet can reduce the chances of developing prostate cancer. Men that eat 5-9 portions of fresh fruits and vegetables per day have far lower rates of prostate cancer then men that don’t. If significant benefit are tomatoes and pink grapefruits. These are packed full of a chemical called lycopene which can help stop cancer cells from developing. A similar benefit can be achieved by eating pasta sauces and ketchup. Changing the diet to incorporate these foods has also proven effective in men that have already been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Regular exercise has also proven beneficial in the fight against prostate cancer. 30 minutes a day 3 times a week is all it takes to help keep the prostate healthy. Exercise gives the body so many benefits one of which is reducing the rates of obesity. As stated above,, men that are obese have far greater rates of prostate cancer then men who are of a healthy weight. Exercise also increases the flood of blood and oxygen to the tissues in the body. This helps keep them healthy and able to fight cancer cells. The exact reasons for exercise fighting cancer are not entirely known but statistics show that men who exercise have far lower rates of prostate and cancer overall. Even cancer patients that exercise endure their treatments with more success and have far better survival rates.

Create a reasonable long term plan. So many start out on a healthy eating and exercise regime only to give it up a month later. Work with your doctor or health care professional to create a plan that will work for you. These are lifetime changes that have to be maintained to achieve the benefits.
