If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, it is important to find out what treatments you may be offered. There are several courses of action which could be taken, and a lot may depend on what type of cancer you have, how advanced it is and how severe it is. In this sense no two cases will be exactly alike.

Prostate cancer can also differ from some other types of cancer in that in some cases no treatment at all is given. This may sound a little unusual – after all, regardless of the stage the cancer is at or what type it is, some kind of treatment is always necessary.

But with prostate cancer things are a little different. It has been discovered through research that when cancerous cells start to grow in the prostate, they can do so extremely slowly. So slowly in fact, that there may be no evidence at all of any growth for some years.

What this means is that if the cancer in the prostate is found extremely early, no treatment at all may be offered. This is because it is not necessary at this stage. Obviously if the cancer starts to grow then that situation will change immediately. The most common course of treatment is simply to monitor the cells at this early stage. This is particularly true if the patient is advancing in years. In a case where the prostate cancer is growing so slowly, the patient may never need treatment because it may never advance to a stage where it is required.

Of course every case is different and early diagnosis will generally provide more in the way of options in every case. If simple monitoring on a regular basis is not deemed to be suitable, other options will then be discussed.

Radiation is a suitable option in some cases. This will generally be used if the prostate cancer is at its early stages and has not gone beyond the organ it started to grow in. The radiation will help to shrink the tumor and is given in doses.

Surgery is another viable option, although this is of course invasive. The general idea is to remove the tumor along with the whole of the prostate, so that the whole tumor is taken out and no cancerous cells remain. If this occurs it could also be that the patient has radiotherapy as well, to make sure no additional stray cells remain in the body. Once again though this will vary from case to case in all probability.

Of course as with all types of cancer some tumors are only discovered once they have grown to a larger size. The next stage on from this is for a tumor to spread beyond the original place of growth. If the prostate cancer has been found to have gone beyond the prostate itself then removal coupled with chemotherapy could be given.

However in some cases hormone therapy can be offered before chemotherapy. This is due to the fact that hormones have an effect on the development of this cancer. If the hormones are suppressed or taken away then the rate of development of the cancer can be slowed.

As you can see there are several methods for tackling the problem of prostate cancer. The most important thing to remember is that your own personal situation will dictate what is offered to you, as well as your own wishes of course. If you should find yourself in this situation, make sure you get as much information as you can and discuss all the options with your specialist. This will ensure you choose the right course of action.
