Prostate Cancer Survival

The word cancer is not one that anyone wants to hear. But regardless of whether you are the one facing the diagnosis or someone you know and love has been diagnosed, you may well want to find out more about the survival rates for the cancer they have.

The good news is that prostate cancer is one of the better cancers when it comes to survival rates. Of course that does not mean that no one ever dies from it, because we all know that this is not the case. But it is possible to survive prostate cancer, and indeed thousands of men are living with it and going about their daily lives as normal.

Survival depends on various factors, and one of the most important things to remember is that no two people or patients are going to be exactly the same. We all have different experiences and a lot will depend on the various factors at play in each case. It is tempting to compare one case of prostate cancer with another and think that the same results and outcome will happen to you or the person you know who has been diagnosed too. But it just doesn’t happen that way.

We all know that cancer survival rates depend on how far advanced the cancer is. The earlier it is found the better the chances are of surviving for a longer period of time. And in the case of prostate cancer it is often diagnosed in older men. This means that if the cancer is very slow to advance – which it often is in this case – it may never cause any actual problems or need treating at all.

It just goes to show then that a diagnosis of cancer of the prostate doesn’t necessarily mean the worst. The diagnosis and prognosis will both be better and lead to a longer period of survival if the cancer is found at a very early stage. Survival is also helped by the fact that there are several treatments on offer for this kind of cancer. So even if it has developed and progressed beyond its early stage there are still plenty of things that can be done to make sure that the patient gets the best survival rate possible.

Obviously if treatment is required then the aim will be to rid the body completely of the cancer. The survival rates will be better if the cancer has not managed to grow outside of its original site, the prostate. Surgery and possibly radiotherapy too will help to make sure that all the cancer has gone.

If the cancer has spread beyond the prostate then survival rates will be lower in many cases – but you should still remember that each case is an individual one and each patient will respond differently. In many cases if the cancer cannot be beaten entirely then it can be perfectly adequately managed for several years. Hormone treatment, radiotherapy and possibly chemotherapy are all options that can help to increase the survival rates in many cases.

So it is possible to survive prostate cancer and continue living a long and productive life. Many different factors come together to have an impact on the survival rates for each person, so if you find yourself (or someone you know) in this situation, be sure to get as much information as possible if you want to know what the survival rates could be.

But remember this – surviving and enjoying a long life is still possible when this diagnosis is made. It all depends on the circumstances of each case.
