Prostate Cancer Surgery

Thousands of men each year find themselves facing a diagnosis of prostate cancer. But even though this is a devastating and shocking diagnosis to get to grips with, there are a variety of treatments available to help conquer or manage the condition.

A lot will depend on whether the cancer has spread, but if it is still within the prostate itself then surgery may be offered as a solution. But within this option there are several types of surgery you could have. As with everything involving cancer, no two people are ever the same and no two cases of cancer are ever identical. This means you could end up having one of three types of operation to help manage or cure you of prostate cancer.

The first option is to remove the prostate entirely. Since you can get by perfectly well without it, it can be a good way to get rid of the tumor and the prostate itself. This operation is more likely to be suggested if the cancer is in its early stages, since it will be most effective at this time.

The second option is to have the testicles taken away surgically. This might sound odd or unusual but in fact it is sometimes done as a way to manage the growth of prostate cancer. In reality this is not such a common operation now, but it may still be offered if the cancer is growing or has returned, and the specialist needs a way to reduce its size as fast as possible.

Finally there is another operation which is normally only done in cases of prostate cancer that are more advanced. When a tumor grows in this area it can cause problems when you need to pass urine. It is important to recognize that in the case of this operation – called a transurethral resection of the prostate – it does not get rid of the cancer altogether. It could be that it has already been treated and now has to be managed as it has returned or has not responded to treatment in other ways. As such this resection operation means you will be able to go to the toilet just as you normally would, instead of experiencing pain or trouble in going.

If you are offered an operation for prostate cancer, it is a good idea to find out which one you will be offered and why. This will help you to understand how your cancer is affecting you, what can be done about it and what the likely outcome of the operation will be. If a case of prostate cancer is caught early, there is a very good chance that the removal of your prostate will get rid of it entirely. This is indeed the most common operation you might have, although you may find that radiation is also offered alongside surgery. This makes doubly sure that no stray cancer cells are still hanging around.

As you can see though, there are several operations that are possible and as modern medicine advances there may be other options too. Most importantly though, if you require an operation to help treat your prostate cancer, make sure you ask what the outcome and prospects are in all respects. How can you expect to feel afterwards? What reaction might you have to it? What can you expect to happen physically and mentally?

The more you know beforehand, the more easily you will be able to cope with the results when you wake up from surgery. And that bodes well for the future, whatever operation you may have had.
