When you hear anyone talking about any type of cancer, you will often hear them asking what stage it is at. Every cancer has its own stages, and if you are diagnosed with prostate cancer you will want to know which stage it has progressed to, as this can affect the type and duration of treatment you might have.
The staging of prostate cancer is done in four stages. The further through the stages the cancer is the more developed it is, so understandably the sooner it is caught the more likely it is that it will still be in a very early stage.
So how do the stages work?
Stage 1 cancer of the prostate is cancer which is found at an early stage. In this case it won’t have gone any further than the prostate itself, so there is no need to treat the area beyond this. In fact in some cases it will simply be monitored if it is very slow to develop and is not in any immediate danger of spreading beyond the initial site.
Stage 2 cancer of the prostate refers to a cancer that is still inside the prostate itself. The difference between stage 1 and stage 2 is that when a case of prostate cancer gets to stage 2, it is more advanced. Thus it could well be that simply watching and monitoring the cancer is not enough to cope with it and further treatment will need to be undertaken.
When a case of prostate cancer is deemed to have reached stage 3, this means it is no longer just in the prostate itself. It will have gone beyond that to the areas immediately beyond the prostate.
Finally there is stage 4 prostate cancer. This, as you might guess from the progression seen so far, is the most advanced type of cancer there is. When a cancer has got to stage 4 it has gone beyond the prostate and beyond the immediate area outside it as well. Cancer cells may well have travelled to other areas of the body, making it harder to treat the cancer. In this case the condition will be managed so that the patient has as normal a life as possible.
If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer you should ask which stage the cancer is at. Coming to terms with the illness and discovering how it might affect you is very important, but obviously you should ask for the amount of information you feel you can cope with at any particular point.
Understanding which stage cancer you have can help you to mount a mental as well as physical fight against it. And it should also be remembered that no two patients will have exactly the same experience when it comes to cancer. There are lots of variables and that means there is no particular time that each stage will take to develop. If the disease is caught in stage 1 then a good recovery is more than possible, so make sure you find all the information you need to understand what is happening to you.
Incidentally you may also come across these four stages referred to as letters rather than numbers. This is no different in any way – it is just that some people refer to the stages as such. Whether they are A to D or 1 to 4, they remain the same.
Make sure you understand the differences between each stage and use that information to help you fight the disease. It can make a difference to have that knowledge, so make sure you do have it.
