As with all types of cancer, prostate cancer can give signs that it is there. The lesson is to learn what those signs are, so that if they appear you can consult your doctor at the earliest possible time.
It sometimes happens that this type of cancer is found during a routine exam. In this case it may be discovered before it presents any signs, and this usually means it has been found early. This is of course the goal, as this cancer is often slow growing and if it is caught this early the outlook for the disease is very positive. In some cases no treatment at all may be given if it is caught this soon, and the specialist may choose to wait and see what happens. No growth may be seen for a long time.
However there are signs that a tumor may be present, so if you know what these are you will know when you need to seek help. Before we go into what these signs are however, do be aware that they do not necessarily indicate that you have cancer. All of these signs can indicate a perfectly innocent problem so don’t assume the worst before you get it checked out.
The symptoms you need to watch out for are mainly related to passing urine. Needless to say if you spot any problems in this area you should consult your doctor straightaway.
The first symptom you should keep an eye out for is the need to urinate more often than you would normally. You should be aware of what is normal for you and then you will be better able to spot any changes. It is also common to notice an increased need to go at night, whereas you would normally go through the night with no problem.
You might also notice that when you get the urge to go, you need to get there very quickly. The prostate is very close to the bladder and the urethra, so if there is any type of growth in the prostate it can press on the urethra and cause you to need to go more urgently than you would normally.
Another symptom of a potential problem is having trouble to actually go. You might get the desire to start urinating but you may not be able to get started – or if you do you might find that the flow is not steady. It could be slow and intermittent instead. In severe cases you may not be able to go at all. Needless to say if you get any problems in this department be sure to schedule an appointment to see your doctor at the earliest opportunity.
There are other symptoms you might see as well, although the above symptoms are the most common ones that start occurring at the beginning of any problem. The main thing to remember though is that even if you have these symptoms it does not automatically mean that cancer is the source of the problem. It is fairly common knowledge that older men tend to experience an enlargement of the prostate, and this can produce one or more of the symptoms that we saw above. Provided you get anything untoward checked out, you will be doing the right thing.
Some of the other signs you might spot are pain when you urinate or ejaculate. Pain is actually a much less common symptom though, and most men who have symptoms will find they have one or more of the ones mentioned earlier.
As you can see though, it would be wrong to assume that all symptoms are a sign of a severe problem.
