Most people have heard of or are aware of prostate cancer. But you may not have heard of PSA’.

These three letters refer to the PSA test which can help to diagnose prostate cancer. They stand for Prostate Specific Antigen, and the test itself is a blood test.

The test is promising in helping to identify early cases of prostate cancer, as this particular cancer can be treated very successfully if it is caught early enough. This is the case with many cancers, but the fact that a simple blood test can point to a possible problem before any actual symptoms appear in reality is very important to note.

If you have the test you will find that it takes place just like any other blood test. The difference is in what the specialists look for in your blood. The prostate creates a protein known as prostate specific antigen (PSA) and this is what can be found in your bloodstream.

However it should be noted that this blood test is not the be all and end all of discovering whether or not you may have prostate cancer. Firstly if your PSA level is higher than it should be, you shouldn’t automatically panic and assume this means you have cancer of the prostate. Many men have this test and discover they have high levels, and yet there is no cancer present.

Similarly there are also cases where some men have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and yet their PSA levels when checked are perfectly normal. As you can see, this blood test is not the only way there is to figure out whether your prostate is behaving normally and whether that could be a cause for concern.

If you have the test and you are told that the levels are higher than they should be, it could be that some other problem has occurred and needs treating. As with many areas of the body there are other conditions that can affect the prostate gland, so don’t automatically assume the worst even if your test comes back with elevated levels.

If you have the test and it does not come back with a normal reading, you will very likely need to have a follow up. The nature of this follow up will depend on how high the levels of PSA are. If it is discovered that they are only slightly higher than they should be, another PSA test will probably be performed after an agreed interval to see whether they have changed or increased.

If your levels of PSA are significantly higher than they should be, your doctor may decide to opt for a biopsy. A biopsy is a process where the specialist will take a sample of tissue from your prostate and then have it tested to see if cancerous cells are present. This is the normal procedure to see what the cells are like, and if they are cancerous or not.

In short then it should be remembered that while a PSA test can be a useful tool in helping to highlight any potential problems with the prostate, it is not always accurate. It can highlight raised levels of this antigen, but it does not mean that you have or will get cancer of the prostate at any point in the future.

As such then you should consider carefully whether you have any other symptoms, and discuss the test with your doctor before deciding whether to have it or not. You may find this an easy decision to make, but it is important to recognize the advantages and disadvantages of going ahead with it.
