Prostate cancer has much in common with other types of cancer in that it can advance and spread away from its initial site of impact. For example, in the early stages of prostate cancer the cancer itself will stay within the prostate. But when the disease advances it will spread away from the prostate and affect other parts of the body as well. When this occurs a cure is not possible.
This advancement of prostate cancer is known as metastatic disease. The goal when treating any cancer is for the tumor to be removed as a whole. But sometimes this does not and cannot happen. Even if it does, there is a chance that the cancer will return at some point in the future.
But regardless of when the cancer occurs and if it has been beaten or not in the past, it could end up reaching the metastatic stage. When a cancer does this, the cells from the original site end up spreading through the body and having an effect on other areas. When this occurs the cancer cannot be cured, but instead it will be managed as best as possible by the specialists dealing with the case.
Some people get confused with this development of cancer. It is sometimes thought that one cancer that spreads and becomes metastatic turns into another cancer, but this isn’t the case. For example, a case of prostate cancer will still be prostate cancer if it should spread to the bones. It will not turn into bone cancer.
When it comes to treating metastatic cancer, the onus is on management rather than cure. As such there should be a balance between the amount of treatment given and the quality of life. This can be decided between the patient and the specialist, so that an agreed decision is reached and the right course of treatment can be started.
Metastatic cancer is obviously a lot different from having primary prostate cancer because it affects more than one part of the body. But that does not mean that someone afflicted with prostate cancer that has gone metastatic will be in a lot of pain. It all depends on the individual case, how far the cancer has developed and which organs it has spread to.
You also need to bear in mind that coping with metastatic cancer can vary from day to day. Some people find that they get good days while other days are not so good. If you are living with prostate metastatic cancer then you need to pay attention to how you are feeling throughout the day. If you do this you can make the right decision for you at any one time.
You might find that your symptoms change as time goes on as well. But however you feel and whatever may be happening be sure to stay in close contact with your doctor or specialist. They will be able to adjust your treatment or pain medication as and when necessary, to ensure that you are on the right amount at all times.
Finding out that your prostate cancer has developed into metastatic cancer is hard to take in. You may not think to ask all the questions that occur to you when this happens. But remember that you can always go back and see them whenever necessary to get expert advice. They are there to help you through the experience and provide the best possible care too. And as and when your symptoms change or you find that the current treatment is not having the effect you wanted it to, you should contact them again to change things. Never settle for pain or symptoms if they don’t have to affect your life.
