Men over the age of fifty years old run the risk of prostate cancer. Statistically one in six are susceptible to receiving a diagnosis. The key to understanding this deadly disease is through research and knowledge. Ignoring the possibilities of receiving a diagnosis of prostate cancer could lead to the possibility of premature death. Receiving the proper information is vital for an opportunity to maintain a healthy prostate.

Learn to eat healthy or healthier than you have been is where it all begins. Have you received a diagnosis of prostate cancer? Are you trying to figure out where is the best place to begin to research and gather information? Well, a healthy diet is a great way to begin this journey. It is so amazing because there are certain foods that contain ingredients that do offer medicinal ingredients. This is not to say that you can skip your next medical doctor’s appointment. However, this is a way for you to help treat your body with the necessary ammunition to keep yourself healthy enough to fight back.

Many recommend choosing a few of the items from the lycopene family as this particular group does offer nutrition in an abundance that you will find you can derive some physical strength. The same is with all food items that contain natural protein like the family of meats. Try designing a new meal plan to add some of the tasty foods from such as tomato products, watermelon, and pink grapefruit. Adding any of these food items to you daily diet will only help to enhance your ability to remain strong.

Food items with selenium of all kinds added to many different types of recipes depending upon your liking for the lycopene. Think of all the tasty salads you have made in the past and now adding Brazil nuts as an extra ingredient will just make that salad come to life . It will also give it a new taste that you will just love. Tuna, beef, turkey, and enriched pasta are also versatile in that they make a wonderful additive to just about everything in one form or another. Have you made any stew lately? Try adding a few almonds and hazelnuts for the benefit of added vitamin E to that stew to spice up the taste. You might even find that it is to your liking.

Almonds make a wonderful additive. This is one very tasty food that the ideas of creative thinking can be limitless. Is there anything almonds will not go well with as an additive? Eat them whole, chop them up, or grind those almonds down to a powder and just think of all the foods that they will mix well. Almonds can be part of the dinner meal, the breakfast cereal, and sprinkled in that ham or turkey sandwich. Besides, eating and adding almonds to the meal planning is another way to lower your glycemic index because the selenium family is so high in protein and general nutrition.

Adding vitamin E is the wheat germ for added benefits , Brazilian nuts, and the hazel nuts that are also very tasty and offer some medical benefits to your overall health. Boy do they taste good in homemade soups, the kind that grandma used to make. They also serve the body too because they contain Lycopene and selenium. However men receiving a diagnosis of prostate cancer will want to keep this down to a minimum because they could have an adverse effect.

Beans are also high in phosphorus, potassium, iron, zinc, calcium, and selenium. These are also rich in antioxidants to prevent any further cell damage to your body. The whole idea is in keeping yourself as healthy as possible while enduring and fighting prostate cancer.

Four main types of treatment involving prostate cancer are possible options for all men. Of course determining which form of treatment is right for you come from discussions with your medical physician. The four main treatments for all men to consider are the following.

Most obvious is one of many surgical procedures

Second option for a form of treatment is medication

Third option for a form of treatment is drug therapy

Forth option for a form of treatment is non-surgical therapy

Discussions with your medical physician will help to determine which form of treatment is right for your need. Surgery unfortunately is one of the lines of defense to eradicate prostate cancer. Only by discussing this issue with your medical physician will you and your doctor come to an agreement on the type of treatment that is most beneficial. A few of the more typical surgeries for prostate cancer are:

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)

Transurethral incision of the prostate(TUIP)

Laser surgery

Open prostatectomy surgery

Transurethral resection of the prostate is a road for the medical physician and the patient to travel when necessary. The treatment utilizes medication to destroy and weaken the cancer cells remaining within the body. This will include cells at the original site. Some of the effects to the body for the individual and the medical physician to watch for are the following:

Recurrent urinary tract infection

Bladder calculus or stones

Hematuria which is blood in the urine

Frequent episodes of retention of urine

Retention of urine leading to renal or kidney damage

Alpha-blockers used in the treatment of prostate cancer are Terazocin, Doxazocin,Tamsulosin, and Alfuzocin. These are specific prescriptions to relax the muscles that are around and near the bladder neck and to increase the passage of urine with little or no pain.

Medications with lower doses increase gradually to the medical physicians directive of what is in the best interest of the patient. Some of the side effects to watch for are a drop in the blood pressure, pupil eye disorders and postural hypotension is another risk factor to make note.

The open prostatectomy surgery is a technical procedure with the patient under a general anesthetic. The male must understand ahead of time of a hospital stay of a few days is a necessary outcome for the medical physician to monitor the vital signs after the surgery. However, this particular surgery is only in very extreme cases and under strict medical guidelines.

This is a very aggressive treatment regiment, but in many cases the end does justify the means. This works best with the early diagnosis of prostate cancer as it can eradicate the cancer cells before they have an opportunity to travel through the man’s body. However, most patients receive guidance after surgery as opposed to before surgery with the understanding that plenty of rest is a necessary requirement.

Prostate cancer treatment therapy is a more precise treatment as it is highly targeted. This is a very effective way to destroy prostate cancer cells often found even after surgery. Today the statistics record very promising outcomes compared with years ago when most men died from a diagnosis of prostate cancer. Today the rate of recurrence stands at a fifty percent survival which is a very high accuracy rate.

Most of the alpha-blockers are fast acting and extremely effective. The improvements through the years show vast improvements of urinary flow usually within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. This will be a noticeable improvement that the individual will most grateful for as it will mean he can now lead a normal life again. This will relieve much of the unnecessary stress the male was experiencing.

Trying to decide where to go now that you have some time to yourself? Does it really matter whether it is summer, spring, winter, or fall? An opportunity to get away for a few days or a week is entertaining pleasant thoughts. Deciding where to go and if you would rather take a trip alone or with family members. These are all the thoughts that are probably going through your head right about now. Okay, so you received a diagnosis of prostate cancer on your last medical doctor’s visit. Now you must decide if you are going to fight and beat the prostate cancer or if you are going to allow the prostate cancer to beat you.

Time is now for you to take a little break and give your self a chance to organize your thoughts. Think about where you would like to go and if you would like to spend time with your family. Sometimes men need to have a little time to be alone, but only you can decide what it is you want to do. Can you afford a trip to the Bahamas or the Canary Islands? Are you thinking about taking your children to spend a little quality family time at Disney?

Choices, choices, it certainly is not easy is it? Maybe you just want to spend some quality time with your own brothers and sisters. The choice is yours to make and if you decide taking a trip somewhere to sort out your thoughts, this is okay too. However you will have to pay close attention to what you pack for this trip. Some of the items you may want to pack to bring along are the following items.

Bring along a sunhat, sunscreen, and skin care

Bring along some sanitizing gel, and refreshing sports drinks

Bring along a sweater, sweat shirt, or two for those chilly nights

Bring along all your necessary medication

Try to talk about your travel plans with your medical physician. Maybe your medical physician will have a few helpful tips for your travel to be one that is successful, relaxing, and rewarding for you. Bring along your insurance information incase you need it while you are away. Ask your insurance representative if you have standing and continuous health coverage even when you leave the state you reside. They may be able to recommend a hospital for you in case of an emergency.

Traveling will make you stop and think of what you will need. You might want to consider making copies of all your current prescriptions to bring with you incase you lose any of your medication. Before you leave be sure pack a few extra refills of your current medication. The whole idea is for you not to run out of your medication. This may not seem very important, but once you are on your way you will understand just how important this really is for everyone concerned.

Know, when you have made your decision on where you would like to travel there is something you will have to consider. If you are planning to travel to a country where some of your medication is on a list for illegal drugs you will need to have a note from your medical physician. The note will need the specifics on why this medication is important for you. This you will keep in a very special place because this is now a very important document.

Preparing the best you know how it is time to grab those airplane tickets and get ready for a wonderful take off to a destination of your choice. Once you have landed and arrived at your hotel you can unpack, unwind, and finally begin to relax. This will be a week of wonder and enjoyment. Now is the time for you to spend the next few days enjoying life and putting your problems aside.

Exercise for anyone is a beneficial but men who have a diagnosis of prostate cancer it can become a life long journey. When you are starting out standing in front of a brick wall there is only one thing to do. You must pick yourself up, climb over that wall, and not allow it to be your obstacle. No matter what is going on in your life, just remember it is your life.

Now, how about trying your hand on some exercise? Mild exercise is a good thing and sometimes it will even change the way you perceive things. A positive outlook on life even though you are facing months of therapy because of prostate cancer is still no reason not to get yourself up and out. Even a few hours of devoted time to walking will help to increase your attitude and your stamina. Make it easy for yourself and you can take a walk on the beach or a nice stroll in a local park. The idea is to get out there and start walking to help keep your muscles tone.

Tried walking, is walking is not for you, try something else instead. Do you enjoy hiking down dirt trails or high up into the mountains? Well strap on those mountain boots and get going. There are other forms of exercise you can try your hand at like bicycle riding, swimming, or even a slow jog. The whole idea is to get yourself out there and start rebuilding your body. You might even surprise yourself and rebuild your self-esteem too.

You see, men who exercise to the equivalent of walking for at least one hour a week for a round trip of two to three miles increased the stamina, rebuilt up the muscles and outlook on life and had a lower risk of dying from prostate cancer. Exercise helps all men suffering from prostate cancer both physically and psychologically because just the mere fact that you are getting yourself outside to accomplish a task is taking the right direction.

However, after a long-term study performed over a ten year period the medical community found that a percentage of the men who participated in a controlled exercise program for up to five hours a week remained alive compared to other men who participated in little to no exercise. Just keep in mind there are psychological factors involved with this. What was found interesting was the fact that men who exercised, built up the self-esteem and muscle tone within their bodies.

Men realize how much is at stake. Every small step you take is a step in a positive direction. You are the shining light for all other men who follow behind in your footsteps. Just as you walk in the footsteps of other men who walked this same path before you and pioneered the way to unity. It is precisely because of all the men who came before you that chose not to remain silent. Now it is your turn to hold your head high and speak out for the countless men that will be right behind you.

Prostate cancer today is so much more survivable than it ever was. Perhaps one day this horrible, debilitating malady will finally be put to rest and on a list of other past diseases that are gone because of medical science. However, it the meantime, you must persevere and continue the march forward into all of the tomorrows. Understand that this is no easy feat to accomplish, but all men everywhere must stand tall together and continue to bring attention to this taker of lives. Keeping in mind that although men are afflicted, there is a population of men who receive the diagnosis and have no avenue to turn.

Emotional stress going through your mind during your time in treatment for prostate cancer is weighing very heavily on you. What you probably remember well are all the up and down days as some treatments worked for you and some treatments did not work for you. You have traveled such a long and difficult road, but the outcome is a positive one and your rewards are there in front of you for the taking. You are relieved after all this time to feel rewarded with a clean bill of health, but the entire ordeal you had to endure will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Emotions do take their toll, yet at the same time you are also feeling very depressed and maybe even a little awkward. Are you nervous to be around your family and friends? Are you feeling self-conscious because of all that you went through? Are you feeling depressed because your body is feeling different now from what it once was? Do you find you are keeping yourself at a distance to avoid the closeness you once shared with your family? Sounds like you are in need of a little TLC to help you rebuild your self-esteem.

Do you even realize you are not alone? There are many support groups out there just waiting for you to join in. When you get together with other men who have been through the same experience you will begin to realize this. You can live a normal quality life now that you have received a clean bill of health. You will soon come to realize this yourself, but it will take some time. There are a few problems that you have had to face and now you are questioning yourself.

Younger men under the age of fifty having gone through this ordeal and do understand what is at stake for them. Many of these young men had medical treatments and surgery and now face other difficulties. Men who already have a family will fare much better by accepting this than younger men who have remained single. Time, weekly counseling, and joining with other survivors will help to change these inadequacies you are now feeling.

Exposure and harsh medication has caused many changes such as some loss of hair, the perception of yourself, and how you believe those around you see you now. Sure things have changed for you, but inside you are still the same person and you need to feel proud of surviving such an ordeal. Okay, yes, you lost most of your hair, but it will grow back. You need to focus on the fact that you survived. You survived for yourself and for all your family and friends who surround you.

Have you considered doing what makes you feel more comfortable. What about those old shirts and sweatshirts you have started wearing, are you that self-conscious about your appearance? You are looking at this entire issue as if you did something wrong. The reality is the exact opposite, as you will soon come to realize. Be proud of all you have accomplished and the ordeal you have just survived. There are many other men who were not as fortunate as you have been.

Maybe it is a good idea to seek out counseling to help you through this ordeal the rest of the way. You really need to understand how brave you really are and how many of your family members and friends are routing for you. There are many other men out there who are looking up to you because you are a survivor. In time and through counseling you will soon come to realize how much you have contributed.

Do you remember how you craved for that barbequed steak surrounded with fried shrimp, a baked potato, and a tossed salad on the side. Yet now you sit in the restaurant, stare at all the foods you once enjoyed and you are unable to push the dish away fast enough? When you take the time to think about it for a minute, it is not the food that you once loved so much that you are turning away. In a sense it is the food that no longer is in agreement with your internal system at the present.

Sitting in the restaurant with your family and continue to just pick at the food and share in the smiles and laughter, but you just are unable to eat. All of a sudden the food does not look appealing, nor does it taste appealing. Your family notices your behavior has changed, but they do not want to upset you because this was to be a celebration of life in your honor.

Truth is food you once considered a treat and always looked forward to be no more. You are seeing the same world through a new perspective and you and not sure how to handle this. You received a diagnosis of prostate cancer some weeks ago and have just begun going through the ordeal. Foods that you once liked all taste different now with a bitter and tasteless taste. What you did not realize is that the strong medications that are utilized to aggressively fight off prostate cancer is wreaking havoc inside your body.

Time will take its toll and then will run its course. When it is over, your taste buds will return to the way they were. All of this you are going through is only temporary so just be a little patient. In this respect it is almost like having ulcers and foods, or your perception of the foods change for a time. Foods you once found distasteful all of a sudden you begin to enjoy. Then there are all those special cravings that come up every once in a while. With so much activity going on within your body it is no wonder that you would view foods differently.

Maybe this is a good time to take advantage and begin choosing better, healthier foods to eat that are more appealing to your taste buds. Your family will come to understand and they might even join you and eat the new foods that you are interested in to keep the solidarity within the family unit solid. A show of support for you and all that you are experiencing. Instead of the fast food restaurant where you stop by a window to place an order, it is time to begin fixing wholesome foods at home. Preparing the supper meal can be a shared experience with the entire family.

Eat wiser and healthier is better for you and is better for your entire family unit. Reintroduce foods like eggs, fish, beans, nuts, and seeds into the family meal planning. Instead of cake, ice cream, cookies, and pastries for dessert, why not put out a bowl of assorted fresh fruit. This just might be a big hit and encourage the entire family to eat healthier. Remember, you must keep your body strong to fight this horrendously deadly disease.

Small baskets of assorted nuts and sliced cheese are another good idea to place on the dinner table. Your family will stand behind you and support you in all that you try to do, so why not try it? Instead of dishes of candies placed strategically around the kitchen, why not have dishes of whole grain crackers, fresh fruit, and dried cereal. This is both nourishing and very delicious.

Okay, so you just walked out of the medical physicians office and you are about to get into your car. Through the corner of your eye you see a man about your age pushing a stroller with a four year old walking close holding a balloon. Suddenly you stop in your tracks and take pause of a scenario you have not given much thought to. All of a sudden it hits you and you never gave the thought of when to have children until this very moment. Climbing back into your car for the long drive home you are trying to think of how to approach your wife.

First you will discuss what transpired in the medical physician’s office and then you will try to ease into the discussion of the two of you having a family in the near future. You are very upset with the results of the tests that came back and more upset with the diagnosis that you at this young age have prostate cancer. You already are aware that the recommendation for treatments is on the plate, but you keep thinking that when you survive this prostate cancer you want to begin a family.

Talking with your wife during dinner she is very supportive of you and what you must accomplish. Your wife will stand at your side each step of the way. Perhaps the two of you can have a discussion with the medical physician to find out what the options are. Will this be possible for you since you are only beginning? If surgery is not mandatory in your case you may have other options open to you, but first you must think about staying strong. This is going to be a very long and painful road to travel and you will need all of your strength together with your wife to get through this.

Hormonal therapies are in reserve for men. Surgical treatments can affect you in ways that you have yet to discover. Obviously surgical treatment will cause a delay or perhaps come to a sudden halt. Changes are usually temporary, but this is an issue for the two of you to speak with the medical physician. Keeping in mind that fertility difficulties sometimes occur even with the best approach and attention.

Right now you have enough to concern yourself with. At the moment you might want to talk with your wife before beginning any treatment. Is it possible incase all does not go well the two of you would consider adoption once you survive this battle with prostate cancer? Sadly, your fertility or lack of fertility will depend on the type and duration of the surgical treatment your medical physician prescribes. Statistically, most men over the age of fifty will have other natural complications, but this will also depend upon the drugs the medical physician is prescribing.

Men who have surgery and are on medication during the treatment of prostate cancer obviously will have a very slim chance of having children biologically, but the issue of adoption is always on the back burner. There are a few things you and your wife can consider as a safety incase the medical physician decides you must have further treatment.

Ask your wife about considering harvesting her eggs

Discuss with your wife about in vitro fertilization

Discuss with your wife about visiting a fertility clinic

Add your name in on a reputable donor list

Consider discussing the possibility of adoption

All of the options listed are viable for you and your wife to discuss about and consider, but at a later date. Right now your focus must be on receiving whatever it takes to keep you alive and well. Think about starting a family down the road. This is an issue you will want to keep open and discuss often.

Sometimes when anyone thinks about fighting prostate cancer they have an image of an older man, but that is not always the case. The truth is that the risk of prostate cancer increases with age, but it begins much earlier in life. The difference is that it can rear its ugly head at any age and this is one of the most important pieces of information all young men need to be aware. You probably thought that unless prostate cancer runs in your family there is nothing to worry about, right. This is an old myth with no foundation in logic or medical science.

Younger men just do not give prostate cancer a thought and yet should. Statistically one of every six young men between the ages of thirty and fifty will receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer. Were you aware that even when the symptoms of prostate cancer begin to show very early on the five-year survival rate stands at about ninety-eight percent? Do you also realize that means that two percent of young men receiving a diagnosis of prostate cancer will not survive?

Clinical, biological, and pathological features of prostate cancer in younger men like you vary from older men. If you receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer before reaching age forty this is an indication of a more serious condition. In younger men there is another difficulty because the prostate tissue is generally dense and will have a hardening or an increase in size.

Medical physicians will then perform two main examinations. The first is a digital rectal exam (DRE) to determine the increase in the size of the prostate. The second is a PSA blood test. This test will show the increase level of the prostate specific antigen. The normal blood count is between four and six. When the blood count is anything higher than a measurement of six the determination is that prostate cancer is present and further treatment is necessary

However, what you do have in your favor is the fact that younger men generally respond better. Younger men having gone through this ordeal do understand what is at stake for them. May of these young men had treatment therapy and now faces other less threatening problems. Older men who already have a family will fare much better by accepting this than young men who have remained single. Time, weekly counseling, and joining with other survivors will help to change these inadequacies you are now feeling.

Exposure to necessary treatment therapy has caused many changes and the perception of your self. How you believe those around you see you will affect your outcome of success or failure. Sure things have changed for you, but inside you are still the same person and you need to feel proud of surviving such an ordeal. You need to focus on the fact that you survived. You survived for yourself and for all your family and friends who surround you.

Why are you looking at this entire issue as you did something wrong? The reality is the exact opposite, as you will soon come to realize. Be proud of all you have accomplished and the ordeal you have just survived. There are many other men who were not as fortunate as you have been.

Maybe it is a good idea to seek out counseling to help you through this ordeal the rest of the way. You really need to understand how brave you really are and how many of your family members and friends are routing for you. There are many other men out there who are looking up to you because you are a survivor. In time and through counseling you will soon come to realize how much you have contributed.

Chemotherapy treatment and the months of constant care are very costly. This is one way to help bring down the cost and help thousands of men who had no chance of getting any assistance. Many of the men helped over the years are now playing a very active role to continue with a trend of teaching and educating others.. This entire concept has grown so large that there are now various men’s groups all around the world.

Treatments, surgeries, and all medications through the various ordeals can leave you with a few side effects, though most men fair well. A few of the more pronounced side effects are the following.

Cancer treatment lasting pain

Bone pain because the cancer can spread

Urinary dysfunction caused by radiation therapy

Bowel dysfunction usually following external beam radiotherapy

Erectile dysfunction

Surgery pain after affects is controllable with medication that will ease the pain or at least get the edge off. Make sure you notify your medical physician right away. The medical physician will prescribe a mild painkiller and gradually have you take less and less until your body heals and you no longer need any pain medication. The idea is to allow your body to heal from the ordeal.

Surgical procedures you are experiencing may cause you to run the risk of complications setting in and this will need the attention of your medical physician immediately. Most often it is organ dysfunction that will set in and this will put you at risk for extreme pain and infections. Radiation therapy that you will most likely be exposed to will include nausea and eating problems, mouth sores, fatigue and probably the loss of hair. To what extent you will lose your hair will depend upon how much radiation and the veracity of the radiation you are exposed.

Exposure to chemotherapy has caused many changes such as the loss of hair, the perception of yourself, and how you believe those around you see you now. Sure things have changed for you, but inside you are still the same person and you need to feel proud of surviving such an ordeal. Okay, yes, you lost most if not all of your hair, but it will grow back. You need to focus on the fact that you survived. You survived for yourself and for all your family and friends who surround you.

Chemotherapy drugs such as anthracyclines are very common and they do have major side effects. Though most men will fare well with treatments including this particular drug, it can cause cardiac toxicity in some patients. To attempt to prevent cardiac toxicity your medical physician will monitor your heart and watch for signs of cardiac damage because of the medication.

Prostate cancer’s natural trend is to spread to the bones, as it is the most vulnerable path. This is controllable when diagnosed early, but when it is not there are other measures the medical physician will research. The problem is that even with hormone therapy the bones are prone to fractures. One of the ways the medical physician will retard the bone fractures and the possibility of osteoporosis caused by testosterone suppression is with biophosphates and more recently Zometa. Fosamax’s medication and Actonel’s medication is also a prescription your medical physician can write for you along with extra intake of calcium and vitamin D.

Of course the best information any medical physician can receive is direct from the patient and that means you. When you notice subtle changes or other difficulties it is up to you to inform your medical physician the next time you visit. This will benefit you as much as it benefits the medical physician.

Men realize how much is at stake. Every small step you take is a step in a positive direction. You are the beacon for all the men who follow behind in your footsteps. Just as you walk in the footsteps of other men who walked this same path before you and pioneered the way to unity. It is precisely because of all the men who came before you that chose not to remain silent. Now it is your turn to hold your head high and speak out for the countless men that will be right behind you.

Prostate cancer today is so much more survivable today than it ever was.

Remembering too that although older men are the ones to predominantly be afflicted, there is a population of younger men who receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer too.

Are you beginning to feel depressed because your body is different now from what it once was? Do you find you are keeping yourself at a distance to avoid the closeness you once shared with your family? Sounds like you are in need of a little tender loving care to help you rebuild your self-esteem and to reclaim your life.

Talking with your wife during dinner is very supportive and what you must accomplish. She will be at your side the entire way. Perhaps the two of you can have a discussion with the medical physician to find out what the options are. Will this be possible for you since you are only beginning? If chemotherapy is not mandatory in your case you may have other options open to you, but first you must think about staying strong. This is going to be a very long and painful road to travel and you will need all of your strength together with your wife to get through this.

Right now you are enduring plenty. At the moment you might want to talk with your wife before beginning any treatment. Is it possible incase all does not go well the two of you would consider adoption once you survive this battle with prostate cancer? Sadly, your fertility or lack of fertility will depend on the type and duration of the chemotherapy your medical physician prescribes. Statistically, most men over the age of fifty will experience erectile dysfunction, but this will also depend upon the drugs the medical physician is prescribing.
